Even after 20 years, Michael Wolf has yet not seen enough of Hong Kong´s rich vernacular culture. In his new book ›Hong Kong Trilogy‹ he thanks the workers who build their elaborate roadside installations with mops, gloves, carts, chairs and the like in alleys and side streets. Ingenuity, talent for improvisation, lack of space, necessity and chance shape ludicrous temporary sculptures – chaotic, individual and above all useful. Also magical winds and mighty typhoons leave visible traces when they spill pieces of laundry onto power lines and billboards, window sills and projections. With ›Hong Kong Trilogy‹ Michael Wolf has created another monument for the breathless untidy everyday culture of his beloved city.

SHANGHAI: Michael Wolf | The Real Toy Story
Exhibition dates: 11 Jan – 12 Feb 2014
Book Signing & Artist Talk: 11 Jan, 4-5 pm
Organiser: K11 Art Foundation
K11 Art Space, B/3 300 Huai Hai Road Central, Huangpu
Partner: M97 Gallery | Sponsored by: ERCO, SENNHEISER
K11 and M97 are pleased to present the “The Real Toy Story” by Hong Kong-based German artist, Michael Wolf. “The Real Toy Story” is an elaborate photographic installation comprised of 16,000 used children’s toys, all made in China and collected by the artist from second-hand shops and flea markets across the United States. Wolf captures the contrast of the innocent plasticity of the toys with the rich individuality of the workers who hand-produce them, as an homage to the faces of China’s nameless factory workers who make most of the inexpensive mass-produced plastic toys consumed by children around the world.
Michael Wolf will give a talk about the exhibition and will also be signing copies of his new book Hong Kong Trilogy.
